Our supplier for wood posts we use in our BA-203 end anchor has informed us the manufacturer of the posts is now drilling two ¾ inch holes for attaching the W-beam: one for a 31 inch installation and another for a 27 inch installation. Our warehouse has informed us several of these have already been purchased, which means they have likely already been installed. We’re somewhat concerned about this because we’re guessing this hasn’t been tested. I don’t know that it would have any effect on performance, but it could come back to haunt us if we end up in court. So, two questions:
Thanks much!
We don’t see any issues with having two holes from a performance standpoint. The second hole is high enough on the post that it will have little to no effect on the flexural strength of the post, and the 4” gap between the holes should not weaken the bolt attachment.
We have seen additional holes in steel and wood posts over time to accommodate rail heights and additional post bolts. For example, the BCT posts that we use in the thrie beam bullnose system have holes for attaching the thrie beam with two post bolts in the valley of the rail.
Thanks!
