A contractor is requesting approval from one of our districts to install a ground-mounted sign (Attachment 1) and plans to use BreakSafe AS4 couplings (Attachment 2) on both supporting posts. Could you please provide any comments and recommendations on this request?
Thanks,
We believe that the Transpo system is a good breakaway coupler system and using it would generally make the system safer than using some kind of fixed base that could cause rapid deceleration. However, it is hard to say how effective the couplers will be on a sign system that is very different than the typical application. As I noted previously, there may still be some concerns even with the couplers installed. However, there are not any breakaway bases that have been designed and tested to this type of sign configuration as far as I know. As such, it may be the best option available, albeit with some unknowns.
Thanks!
