Small Roadside Sign Supports

Question
State IL
Description Text

One of our districts is asking if the 2”x10” wood post, shown on the attached Small Entrance Sign detail, would be crashworthy without weakened the post but having the 10” post side perpendicular to the errant vehicle trajectory? They mentioned, they could drill the posts, but it will probably lead to rot over time.

Please share your thoughts at your earliest convenience.

Thanks,

I will lead off with saying I don’t have any knowledge of testing of a system similar to this, but I do think we can make some comments regarding its performance.

  1. In general, we believe that the sign has a fair potential for adequate safety performance. The sign is essentially a low height sign, so the potential for windshield interaction should be limited.
  2. I assume that the sign is not used on very high speed roadways? This would help limit potential concerns as well.
  3. The “2”x10” boards are not overtly strong. We have tested 4”x4” temporary wood sign supports successfully for taller signs.
  4. Drilling 3”-4” diameter holes in the base of the posts is a good option for further reducing the impact hazard if it can be dealt with operationally.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks!
