I was recently made aware of a MGS installation in combination with a 4” curb transitioning to 6” high on either side of a curb-opening storm sewer inlet. The 3 attached photos show the area in question. The 2 posts conflicting with the inlet were moved a half post space away and installed next to the structure resulting in a 12.5’ span. I’m certain this needs to be nested rail at a minimum and wanted to get your thoughts on addressing this installation since it isn’t the typical omitted post in combination with curb. The plans actually called for long-span MGS with 2 posts omitted which I believe doesn’t apply here anyway due to the curb. I’m awaiting a response from project staff on whether or not any of the installed posts are CRT posts specified for the long-span. Do you have concerns with CRT posts in this case if they were installed?
Any recommendations and guidance you can provide are greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
You certainly have an interesting combination of MGS curb, MGS long span, and MGS omitted post. I briefly discussed this with Bob, and we think you are on the right track. Nested rail is a good idea based on the MGS omitted post with curb testing (failed single ply). Based on the post spacing and span length shown, we like the idea of using CRT posts for the half-spacing posts (2 on each side of the inlet for a total of 4 CRT posts). This would result in an installation similar to a mini long span installation, only nested rail for use with a curb.
Of course, this configuration has not been fully evaluated via crash testing or simulation, but it is likely the best you can do for this site at this time.
