I got a question from one of our designers about what size radius that MGS can be shop bent and still function properly. I know that the larger the radius the better the guardrail should perform. What’s the smallest size radius that standard MGS guardrail could be installed and still function properly?
In terms of curved guardrail, there is some available research. GMU conducted a NCHRP study for guardrail on the outside of superelevated curves and guidance was provided. I have attached that document.
We also done some work for Wisconsin regarding large radii on the interior of the curves under TL-2 as well. This research did not include testing, but it does represent some guidance. The link to that research is below.
