Type III Barricade

Question
State MN
Description Text

MnDOT Maintenance has previously used an NCHRP 350 crashworthy type III barricade that allowed for 6’ barricade panels and we’re wondering if the non-proprietary type III barricade tested under report number TRP-03-394-18 Revision-1 and TRP-03-416-20 would remain MASH crashworthy if the barricade panel length was reduced to 6’. Keeping the overhangs the same and narrowing the separation the vertical perforated tubes. MnDOT has adapted a lot of storage racks and vehicles to accommodate this size of panel and it would be advantageous if we could continue to use them.

We do not see any issues with reducing the overall width of the Type III barricade based on the proposed modifications. Safety performance would not be expected to be significantly affected if the only change was the overall panel length and separation distance between the vertical supports.

thanks!
