I would have concerns with the turn-down end as a trailing end terminal due to the potential for reverse direction impacts. We tested the current trailing end anchorage that we use for the MGS in the reverse direction with the small car and found that the car became wedged underneath the anchor cable prior to it releasing. Similar concerns would exist with the turn-down ends except that it might be even more difficult to release and likely decelerate the vehicle faster. I am not aware of reverse direction tests being run on the turn-down as it is not generally considered crashworthy on the approach end.
Thus, if one was to use the turn-down end, we would recommend it be place outside the clear zone by flaring the rail. One would also have to consider if the turn-down had sufficient anchorage. I am not sure off the top of my head what anchorage the turn-down currently has, but it would need to be equal or greater than the anchorages we have been using with the MGS.
