The faculty and staff of the MwRSF have had the pleasure of answering queries from the Pooled Fund Program member states over a myriad of topics. These queries involve both applications of existing roadside hardware, interpretation of existing design standards, adaptations of previously developed designs, and occasionally, investigation of roadside safety feature failures. While the State of Nebraska supports some faculty time in these functions, the staff at the MwRSF are funded exclusively by contract dollars. It is very difficult to allocate time (and pay) for these functions.
This funding has been utilized for wide variety of functions dealing with numerous state-specific needs, such as those often highlighted in the quarterly progress reports. This funding has helped our staff immeasurably in accounting for activities over the course of the past years. Based on our spending over the last three years we would like to request $50,001.00 in funding for FY 25.
MwRSF also has a website for Midwest Pooled Fund consulting efforts. This website allows the states to submit problems and inquiries directly to the website. MwRSF will then respond to the consulting problems through the website, and the problems and responses are archived in a searchable database. In addition, MwRSF has entered in the questions and responses from all of the previous consulting summaries. Thus, the site has a complete archive of consulting responses. This archive is searchable and provides an excellent resource for state DOTs seeking information on roadside safety-related topics. The website can be found at the following address:
We would ask that all Pooled Fund member states use the new site from this point forward for their inquiries. In addition, if there are any issues with the performance of the website, please inform MwRSF so that the site can be improved.
From the reactions of the various states in the Pooled Fund Program, we believe that the MwRSF is a valuable resource for answering questions in regard to roadside safety issues. This funding will allow MwRSF researchers and engineers to adequately respond to issues arising during the year and reduce the reluctance of Pooled Fund member states to ask questions when necessary. Once again, major issues discussed with the states have been documented in our Quarterly Progress Reports.
